Fourth London rail link for Sunderland

Sunderland commuters are on track to get a fourth daily train service to London. The Office of Rail Regulation this week cleared the way for operator Grand Central to launch an extra service to the capital in the summer.

Tom Clift, managing director of Grand Central said: "The people of the North East and North Yorkshire have campaigned long and hard in support of an additional direct daily service to the capital.

"Now the hard work begins in getting the processes and resources in place to enable this new daily return service between Sunderland and London to operate, we anticipate from June of this year."

The new service to London will leave Sunderland at 9.18am and the extra return train will depart Kings Cross at 7.18pm. At the moment, anyone wanting to travel to London must leave Sunderland at 6.41am or wait until 12.30pm, while the last train back to Wearside leaves King's Cross at 4.50pm.
