Leading edge start up support for software businesses

An injection of business development funding on Wearside is to increase the creation and growth of small businesses in the North East’s software sector.

The North East Business and Innovation Centre (BIC) at Sunderland has secured a £2.1m investment from One North East to help drive forward the Sunderland Software City initiative and create over 70 new businesses in the area.

The Sunderland Software City initiative is developing the region’s knowledge assets and physical infrastructure to create and grow software enterprises and attract inward investment.

The BIC’s contribution to the initiative is focusing on enterprise, business incubation and growth for the development of new software products and processes.

The project is being part financed by the European Union’s ERDF Competitiveness Programme 2007-13, securing £855,000 ERDF investment to add to £1.25m through Solutions for Business, the Government’s portfolio of publicly funded business support to help companies start and grow.
